1705 Bay St

The waterfront home is located in a residential neighborhood; therefore, parties, events and excessive noise are strictly prohibited. Anyone violating this notice will be asked to leave the property. Please be respectful of our neighbors and the community.

This beautifully restored home, listed on the National Historic Register, exudes a wonderful blend of historic charm and southern hospitality combined with modern 21st century comforts.  Relax with your favorite book on the porch swing overlooking the bay!  Sip a cool drink from one of the many rockers on the spacious wrap-around porch. Watch fishing, recreational and tour boats sail by. You may even see dolphins frolicking! This waterfront home offers some of the best views in all of Beaufort! A short walk along the water, shaded by expansive oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, will bring guests to numerous shops, restaurants, and the popular Waterfront Park.

Originally the home of a prominent local family, it was known as “The Teacherage” for decades as a home for single teachers. This home later became one of the south’s most popular bed and breakfast inns. A recent meticulous major renovation has returned the stately home to its original intent as a single-family private escape where guests can enjoy five spacious bedrooms and six bathrooms. Each bedroom, as well as the dining room, kitchen and living room, offers a water view.

Your sea island retreat combines a wonderful blend of historic architectural features such as original neoclassic columns, a gum wood bannister, and beautifully crafted moldings along with modern amenities. Along with superb water views, the home features a vintage claw-foot soaking tub, original heart pine, oak and mahogany floors, elegant marble countertops, a lovely garden, a historic rib cage brass shower, gas fireplace and comfortable beds with high-quality linens. A second floor screened-in porch offers the convenience of a nearby beverage center complete with coffee maker and refrigerator that allows guests to roll out of bed and enjoy a cup of coffee while gazing at the water. The home features an impressive collection of comfortable, but not fussy, 18th and 19th century antiques. Because it provides a unique blend of large communal spaces and private bedrooms, this home would make a perfect destination for groups traveling together such as couples, girlfriends’ getaways, and small family reunions.

About Historic Beaufort

Those fascinated by history, antebellum architecture, gourmet dining, shopping, gallery browsing or water activities (sailing, kayaking, beach-combing), are sure to love Beaufort! Beaufort is a safe, vibrant place to spend either a special weekend or a long vacation. Set conveniently between Savannah and Charleston, Beaufort retains its small-town charm but offers much to do.

The history of the Civil War played an impressive role in Beaufort’s survival and legacy. There are several exciting things to do for history buffs. Travel back in time by taking a self-guided history walk through our National Historic District. A short horse and buggy tour clops down our hallowed streets in an hour-long tour. Take an early evening graveyard tour visiting many historical and beautiful churches around the downtown area, such as Saint Helena’s Episcopal Church.

Life on the Water

Beaufort is situated on one of approximately 200 islands on the Intracoastal Waterway. Its geographic location is at the mouth of the Port Royal Sound which is the source of high salty tides, picturesque marshes and beaches, and hurricane-free weather. A short (15-minute) drive to Hunting Island State Park, brings you to the Atlantic coast where you can enjoy sand, surf, long walks on the South Carolina shoreline, a tour of the historic lighthouse, or to watch newly hatched sea turtles scramble to the sea. Numerous eco tours are available for exploring the rivers and marshes, either by kayak or boat.

Comfortable, Spacious Accommodations

Bedrooms and Bathrooms (5 bedrooms and 5 ½ baths)

One suite is located on the first floor. The second floor offers three spacious bedrooms (each with water views) and three private remodeled baths.
